Dental Implant FAQs

Here at Advanced Dental Center Of Florence, we understand that most patients have many important questions about dental implants, the benefits and the installation process. This Frequently Asked Questions page is intended to give patients the information they need to choose the treatment they need for excellent oral health and a confident smile.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a natural-looking tooth replacement option where artificial teeth are permanently implanted into the patient’s jawbone. Dental implants are made of small titanium fixtures, a middle piece called an abutment and a crown or artificial tooth.

Can any dentist install dental implants?

Technically any dentist can install dental implants.  However, to get the best results and maximum chance for success, patients should make sure their dental implants provider is licensed and experienced.

How do I find a dental implants specialist?

The first step is to ensure your dental implants provider is licensed and specially trained to install dental implants.  Your provider should also have many years experience in installing dental implants.  Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask your dentist for references, patient testimonials and pictures to show their patient results.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Missing teeth cause an increased risk of periodontal disease, tooth decay and further tooth loss. Dental implants offer a more aesthetically pleasing smile, improved oral health, better speech, a stronger bite, increased confidence and freedom to once again eat the foods they love.

How are dental implants placed?

In a series of office visits, a small titanium fixture is implanted directly into the jawbone. Next, a middle piece called an abutment is attached. While the patient heals, the doctor begins carefully crafting your replacement tooth. And finally, the crown (or artificial tooth) is placed on the abutment. Once completely healed, the patient is left with a natural-looking and stunning smile.

Are dental implants expensive?

Typically dental implants cost between $1,000 and $4,000. However, total costs can depend on a variety factors including geographical location, number of implants, type of implant and other factors.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most dentists agree that successful dental implant surgery requires good overall health, sufficient dental hygiene and adequate jaw bone and tissues to firmly support a dental implant. However, each patient must have a consultation so that Dr. Griffin can examine your mouth and determine if dental implants are a good option for you.

Are there less desirable candidates for dental implants?

Yes, smokers, women who are pregnant, young children, patients with substance abuse problems, patients with auto-immune diseases and diabetics are less desirable candidates for dental implants.  However, each individual patient must be evaluated by one of our doctors before the decision can be made of whether dental implants are a good option for each patient.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Dental hygiene for your implants is the same as your normal routine. Patients should be visit their dentist, brush and floss regularly. Inspection of the implant site should also be done regularly to check for irregularities or signs of infection.

Is there a good age for getting dental implants?

Many of our patients are past the age of forty, but there is no ideal age for installing dental implants.  Younger patients are not preferred because their jawbones have not stopped growing yet.

How long will my dental implants last?

Dental implants can last for many years if care for properly.  On average, most last up to 15 years.
